A few months ago my husband and I meet a couple who lived on the road, they traveled from state to state setting up here and there to sell hand made looking glasses. We stayed and talked with them so long we never really got a chance to attend the event at our local Harley dealer.
After hearing their story we joked for weeks about selling out and buying an RV to live in, romanticizing about attending trade shows as a way of life. At first the idea was to find a small weekender and try it out for the summer, then we really started looking and decided if were serious why not go all in with a Class A land yacht. It was a stretch but the payments would be about the same as rent so we looked into it. However, living on the road meant living job to job and left little room for error when it came to payments, insurance, food, you know the basic stuff.
So the idea drifted in and out of our minds while the search continued. Then we thought why not buy something old or slightly damaged and fix it up. Then we could afford the size we wanted and take our time fixing it up. We could make it unique, after all thats what we have done to every house we have lived in since we got married 15+ years ago.
Once that idea was in my head I researched it until my head the tons of jumbled up ideas gave me a headache. I studied the different classes, options, and system functions down to the bare bones. It was evident dealing with fire and/or water damage was going to be a big job, not the end of the world just a lot of time and money...but possible.
Speaking of time, it was passing us by. Most everyone thought we had gone mad, especially with the sell out. Keeping a home base was not going to be realistic, I will admit the idea of selling everything did leave a queasy feeling in my stomach at first. Then I started looking around, the furniture could be replaced, the decorations had been up for so long I probably would have redecorated soon anyway, and the rest was clutter.
Now I can honestly say the sell out will lift so much off my shoulders. The RV will be furnished and decorated to a certain extent even if it is limited in some ways. Plus, knowing me I will find away to save a few keepsakes. The bonus is that we have discovered that it's not that uncommon for couples and families to live the RV life, so finding a work at home job, traveling to trade shows or working in various parks opens a world of endless possibilities and makes our endevour more than an idea.
So now when someone tells me how crazy it sounds, I respond with "We are both resourceful adults, and the craziness is a part of our lives here, there or anywhere." Then I ask "Can you wake up in one place and say, I want a condo by the water and know that it's possible? No? That's exactly what we plan to do!."
